Shoe size calculator: measuring your foot
From a Brannock reading or a pen tracing to US, UK, EU and cm sizes, and a width letter.
What it does
Enter your foot length (and, if you have them, the ball width and the
heel-to-ball length). The calculator gives your size in US (men's,
women's or children's), UK and EU, the cm to look for on a brand's
size chart, the Mondopoint (length/width in mm), and an estimate of your
width letter.
Open it from Calculators → Data Tools → Shoe Size Calculator.
Measuring at home
- Measure late in the day, wearing the socks you will wear in the shoe.
- Stand on paper with your heel against a wall and your weight on the foot.
- Trace around the foot with the pen upright.
- Length: heel to the tip of the longest toe. Width: straight across the
widest part, at the ball of the foot.
- Measure both feet. The calculator sizes for the longer one.
Choose A pen tracing on paper: the pen line sits outside your foot,
so 3 mm comes off the length and the width (you can change the amount).
The scales behind it
- US sizes use the Brannock scale shoe stores use: men's size
= 3 × foot length in inches − 22. One size is ⅓ inch (8.5 mm).
- US women's is shown on the scale most running brands print
(men's + 1.5). The Brannock device's own women's scale reads half a
size lower; both are shown.
- Children's sizes run to 13½, then youth 1–7 on the men's scale.
- UK = US men's − 1. EU = 1.5 × foot length in cm + 2.
- Heel to ball: if your ball sits further forward than your toe
length implies, the shoe is sized by it, so its flex point lands
under your ball. A tracing makes this hard to mark: 6 mm is a whole
size, and the calculator warns when it sizes you up a size or more.
- Width letters come from the Brannock width scale (men's D and
women's B are standard). Women's letters are set two steps below
men's at the same width, because women's lasts are built narrower.
Treat the letter as a guide: brands differ.
Running, everyday, cycling
- Running / triathlon adds half a size of toe room for swelling on
long runs and for downhills.
- Everyday gives the size your foot measures.
- Cycling shoes are sized in EU and fit snug: no extra room.
Brand charts
Brands disagree by up to a full size. Every brand chart lists a foot
length in cm per size: pick the size whose cm is at least the one the
calculator shows. Adidas uses EU sizes in thirds.
